Why Is Golf One of the Most Expensive Sports Out There?

We all know that individual sports are likely to be more expensive than group ones. However, in particular, one sport is always associated with glamour, higher socioeconomic status, or, simply put, money. That sport is golf. When comparing golf with other individual sports, it can seem pretty expensive – which is why some golf enthusiasts are quick to give up this as a hobby.

If you want to know what things make golf such an expensive hobby, here’s what you need to know.

Equipment

One of the most expensive things about this sport is the equipment used to play. If you plan to play golf one or two times in your life, you can rent most of the equipment you need to play. On the other hand, if you want to turn this into a hobby and plan on committing, you might face some serious expanses. Golf players need clubs, balls, bags, drivers, balls, clothing and other equipment, and the unfortunate thing is that the top-quality equipment brands are also the most expensive ones on the market.

Drivers, woods, irons, wedges and putters can each be around at least two hundred US dollars. Besides, the average cost of golf clubs for beginners is between $200 and $300, while it can get much pricier. Suppose you add that the rest of the equipment’s expenses, you will get to an amount of at least a couple of hundreds of dollars.

After all, these will last you a couple of years, if not more, so if you consider it, this might not be that big of an investment after all.

Club Membership

Golf fans who plan to play in their free time need to be aware of the club membership costs. Some of the golf courses will charge at least $20-$30 per round, while the top-rated ones will cost you way more than that – plus, you will probably have to wait to be squeezed into their tight schedule. Let’s not forget that you have to wear proper clothes with a collar and no denim on the course.

Of course, paying a membership fee won’t be a problem if you are a billionaire. As a matter of fact, there are special fees for joining a private club, and they can go as high as $250,000 per year. But, don’t worry, the prices for standard membership are much lower. For example, annual dues can be anywhere between $1,000 – $5,000, which is around $100-$400 every month. It mostly depends on what type of membership you want; Corporate, Individual, Family, Out-of-state, etc. Naturally, some clubs will go below or even beyond that range.

Courses and Maintenance

One of the reasons golf is so expensive is the club membership fee, and as you could see, this fee can get quite expensive. The reason for this is the course maintenance. If you want to play on luscious green grass, perfect tee box, roughs and fairways, you should be aware that maintaining such courses ask for a lot of money. Plus, it requires a pretty big area of land. So, if you are still up for making this your hobby, look for the best option that fits into your budget.
